JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI, February 11, 2022 — SupportEd President, Diane Staehr Fenner, PhD, was the keynote speaker at the Alabama-Mississippi Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (AMTESOL) conference on January 28, 2022.
AMTESOL serves the needs of intensive program teachers, administrators, graduate students, and P-12 teachers in the field of ESL throughout Alabama and Mississippi. AMTESOL is also an affiliate of TESOL International Association. The conference was held from January 27 – 29, 2022.
With this year’s conference theme, “reach across, reach out, reach up,” the three-day conference focused on culture advocacy that consisted of workshops, presentations, and networking sessions.
Dr. Staehr Fenner keynoted the conference on the topic Advocating for Culturally Responsive Teaching for Multilingual Learners. She also led a workshop on Culturally Responsive Teaching for Multilingual Learners: Tools for Equity, bringing the book to life through participants’ application of the material to their contexts.
“Diane was a breath of fresh air. She is down to earth and real with us about how to best help ELs,” stated Lynn Fuller, Vice President and 2022 Conference Chair of AMTESOL. “Her participation in our conference gave us structure to put our ideas together with her keynote motivating us to advocate for student learning and her workshop giving hands-on ways to make that happen,” commented Fuller.
About AMTESOL
AMTESOL was founded in 1982, and its membership is open to everyone interested in, and or involved in, the teaching and administration programs in English as a second or foreign language. Historically speaking, AMTESOL provides one of the few opportunities for ESL professionals in Alabama and Mississippi to receive local support, professional development, and opportunities to share ideas and experience. Today, AMTESOL strives to continue this service in combination with support programs that may already be in place.
